BPNIC Press Statement, 7/5/2007
The
Brazilian Palestinian National Interest Committee (BPNIC)
applauds Administration approval for the passing of the
resolution on resettlement of Palestinian refugees from Iraq.
The transfer includes an estimated 100 refugees, of which two
families will be settled in Sao Paulo, while eighteen families
will go to Rio Grande do Sul.
This transfer holds heightened significance as the Palestinian
Authority faces renewed challenges from Israel’s confiscation of
land to further expand settlements and its continued suffocation
of cities and towns, as well as the danger posed by Israel’s
increased violent incursions into the West Bank.
Work has already begun in preparation for the arrival. Bilingual
staff will ensure a smooth integration into Brazilian society.
Rental accommodation, furniture and assistance for 24 months
will be provided by the Government of Brazil. Volunteers will provide moral support for the integration in addition to
assisting with job placement.
All children will be given the opportunity to attend classes in
Portuguese, until the start of the next school year in March
2008, when they will be able to fully participate in school.
The transfer represents a strong relation between Brazil and the
Palestinian National Authority which is becoming increasingly worried for
Palestinians living in Iraq, estimated to be around 13,000.
