At the Palestinian American National Conference
held in the month of June, 2008 BPNIC Executive Director addressed a
dozen Palestinian politicians and activists on the committee’s
strategic position in opposition to Israeli human rights abuses in
Palestine. Husam Bajis, an outspoken Palestinian political analyst
leading the Palestinian National Interest Committee in Brazil who
advises the Brazilian Foreign Ministry on the situation in
Palestine, discussed the prospects for Brazil becoming a leading
nation for providing a sense of balance between Palestine and the
Israelis and between Arab countries and the Israelis, the human
rights abuses and military raids in Arabs towns and cities in
Palestine, and the implications to world politics if a Palestinian
state is not resurrected in the Middle East.
In particular, Husam emphasized the success of the Brazilian Foreign
Ministry to mobilize quick support to the Palestinian economy of
which included a recent contribution of US$ 10 million and a 20
person delegation dedicated to studying future cooperative projects
between Brazil and Palestine, noting that such measures empower the
Palestinians to secure a state of their own, and the ability to
govern effectively. Husam also asserted that Israel’s daily
incursions in the West Bank and ongoing military strikes in Gaza are
spurring Palestinians to lose confidence in the US-driven peace
process.
In addition to holding talks with Palestinian leadership in the
United States during the months of June and July, BPNIC’s leadership
held discussions with the PLO Ambassador to Washington Dr. Nabil
Abuznaid, Chairman of the Palestinian National Authority Legislative
Council-Political Committee Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, President of the
Arab American Institute Dr. James Zogby, Palestinian National
Initiative Secretary General Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, Supreme Judge of
Palestine Dr. Tayseer Rajab Al-Tamimi, Archbishop Theodosios of the
Greek Orthadox Patriarchate of Jerusalem Dr. Attalah Hanna.
BPNIC also visited the PLO Special Delegation to Brasilia Ambassador
Ibrahim Al Zeben, the Orthodox Church in Brazil-Antiochian
Archdiocese of São Paulo Metropolitan Damaskinos Mansour and held
discussions with the Brazilian Foreign Ministry –Middle East
Division Deputy Rafeal Leme. |
