BPNIC Briefing, January 2009
Deputy Pedro Wilson (PT-GO) in January 2009 defended the
actions of the
government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in
finding a solution for peace in the Middle East and the
immediate cease-fire between Israel and the
Palestinians in Gaza,
reported Congresso em Foco. He retorted the criticism of
former foreign ministers Celso Lafer and Luis Felippe
Lampréia, both of the FHC government, which questioned the
influence of Brazil in the
negotiations and the validity of the visit of
Minister Celso Amorim.
"Only those who do not believe in Brazil can make a comment
like this, we live a new time and our international
credibility is immense", he said.
He reaffirmed the Brazilian Government, which follows with
concern the intensification of limitless
attacks of Israel on
the occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza, through a
message from
President Lula, proposes that the
UN intermediate
urgently for resumption of dialogue in accordance to what
was agreed upon at the
Annapolis Conference,
held in the United States in November 2007.
Deputy Pedro Wilson stated, the UN initiative of President
Lula along with the Brazilian message sent to the
international community
to hold an emergency meeting to negotiate peace has the
support of
Congress and is supported by the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. "We
must seek, with determination, democratically elected
representatives of the
Palestinian National Authority, the government of Israel
and all the leaders of the international community to
mediate the peace,
to stop the military attacks on the Gaza Strip, dismantle
the military camps, demolish
the wall and
ensure free access of the
Palestinian people
to their cities", he said.
Deputy Pedro Wilson reaffirmed that
Brazil needs a
firm position without
hypocrisy, without neutrality, a large mobilization of
objectives in the pursuit of
the peace we all want, and which is what President Lula
wants.
With the support of its members, the Brazilian Palestinian
National Interest Committee continues to promote Brazil as
key for Palestinian-Israeli peace, and promote Brazil's
interests in the Middle East by urging its members to
maintain contact with Members of Congress, to adopt
resolutions to help in restoring the peace process and thus
resolve the humanitarian situation in order to avoid future
conflicts in the region, and to support important
initiatives that would lead to the creation of a Palestinian
State.
