Up a Group of Friends
September 14, 2007
Lula’s Administration Proposes Setting Up a Group of Friends for Palestine; in
his address to the UN General Assembly in August of 2006, President Lula
suggested the possibility of calling a broad, UN-sponsored Conference, with the
participation of countries from the region as well as other nations, including
developing ones.
Later in the Seminar on Peace and Reconciliation - Oslo, September 14, 2007,
Minister Celso Amorim spoke about the idea of setting up a Group of Friends for
Palestine. This Group could be composed of interested countries that have a
consensus-building profile, international credibility and good relations with
all parties.
In August of 2007, in a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas, President Lula raised the subject and suggested that work should begin on
setting up the Group of Friends.
